January 2008

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Players:

The 2007 Harleysville Baseball season proved to be exciting and quite successful. Harleysville Baseball had over 50 teams in the 6-12 age group plus 8 teams in the Connie Mack 13-16 age group. All of the divisions were competitive and fun for the players, coaches and parents. Harleysville Baseball fielded tournament teams in the 9, 10, 11 and 12 year old age groups last year. These teams all had winning records and brought home several tournament titles to Harleysville. Our 12 year old team also won the Cal Ripken State tournament and went to the regional semi-final game, losing a close game 5-2 against Bridgewater NJ.  Our Connie Mack A team placed second in the Bux-Mont Playoffs for the State championship.  Clearly, 2007 was a very successful season and we look forward to more of the same in the 2008 season.

Harleysville Baseball also hosted tournaments for the 10, 11 and 12-year-old divisions last year.  Sixteen 10 and 11 and 12-year-old teams came to Harleysville from four states. Each tournament was a great success with all the participating teams commenting on how well the tournaments were run and the great baseball complex that Harleysville is blessed to have. The success of these tournaments is a direct reflection on the effort from our dedicated group of volunteers. I want to again thank them for all their help, and look forward to Harleysville hosting more successful tournaments this year.

We were also be host to the Phillies Local and Regional Home Run Derby Competitions.  Harleysville Baseball once again sent a player from our league to Citizens Bank Park for the Finals. We will be hosting these events again this year thanks to the Phillies Organization.

Our complex continues to grow and improve. This past season we added several new bleachers, expanded three of our fields to accommodate the 50/70 format for our Majors division for the upcoming season.  We are also building a new storage shed and adding restrooms to be complete for opening ceremonies for the 2008 season.  Your fund raising contributions enable us to make these enhancements and make Harleysville Baseball successful.

Started in 2003, our Kid-Safe Program, which requires all coaches and umpires to have a PA State Police background check to be performed prior to being able to active participation within Harleysville Baseball, continues.  We will be asking all new coaches and umpires to complete this form again this year. The response to this program was quite positive and I’d like to thank all of the volunteer coaches and umpires.

This was our first year as an affiliate of the Cal Ripken baseball and proved to be very exciting.  This gives us the opportunity to partner with a fast growing national organization, much like Little League. This affiliation affords our league some added advantages, such as umpire and coaching certifications, and a district, regional, and national play-off system, but control of the league still remains on a local level.

I would also like to remind you that all are welcome at our organizational meetings that are held on the second Thursday of every month at the Lower Salford Township Municipal Building. The meetings start at 7:30 P.M. except during the season, when the starting time is moved to 8:30 P.M. to accommodate our games. For this organization to continue to grow and enjoy success we need everyone’s active participation.
